Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov officially entered their “boyfriend era” at the end of Heated Rivalry Season 1, but their relationship could face changes when Season 2 begins.

Based on Rachel Reid’s Game Changers book series, creator Jacob Tierney will adapt the sixth novel, The Long Game, for the new season.

However, the writer-director hints that he may take a slightly different approach, tweaking aspects of the story for the adaptation.

The Long Game is the sixth and longest installment in Rachel Reid’s Game Changers book series, but Jacob Tierney has no plans to cover its entire plot.

“Who said I’m doing it all? There’s a lot of material,” he told Deadline.

While the novel serves as a direct sequel to Shane and Ilya’s relationship in Season 1, some storylines may continue into subsequent seasons. But fans don’t have to worry, Tierney promised they would remain faithful to the source material while mapping out the new season.

The Long Game is like sex scenes from a marriage. I don’t want to say we are making Bergman here, but you’ve got your happy ending, you’re in love, you get to be in a relationship,” he explained. “But, as most adults know, you think that’s when it gets easy? It’s not. That’s when it gets hard. That’s when you have to make real decisions. That’s when real life can often smack you in the face.”

Despite these hurdles, Tierney teased that the show would balance the new material’s heavy drama with the fan-favorite onscreen romance of Shane and Ilya. In fact, their “relationship is on a journey that will end happily.”

Yet, like all romances, there will be ups and downs, and challenges they must face regarding themselves, each other, their life choices, and their identities as a queer couple.

“We’re just continuing to give Shane and Ilya the seriousness that this love affair deserves while also continuing to exist within the confines of the genre that we’re in, which I love,” Tierney added. “I want them to be happy, but I also want to show that that’s not easy.”

Tierney further noted that while Reid’s novels celebrate the joy of queerness, they never shy away from its challenges. Love, especially in a queer context, requires courage, guts, and sacrifice.

“And that, to me, is a triumph. That’s what we’re trying to do here,” he said.

While details about Heated Rivalry Season 2 remain under wraps, Connor Storrie, who plays Ilya, previously teased that fans should “start reading The Long Game” if they want spoilers.

Based on the book, Season 2 will see Shane and Ilya confronting their fears and insecurities, wrestling with codependency, depression, and self-perception while trying to maintain their love for each other.

Despite seeing each other for over a decade, they continue to keep their relationship a secret.

Shane feels the need to hide their romance to stay at the top of his game, fearing that going public could ruin everything. Meanwhile, Ilya begins to question whether what they have can truly last.

Ultimately, they are forced to choose between love and hockey and decide what truly matters most to them.
