For the past few years, HBO Max and producer Greg Berlanti have been working on a Green Lantern series. However, while we've been hearing some significant updates on its progress, the project was still nowhere close to production. Now, it looks like the series is going back to scratch as it is now changing its gear.
The Hollywood Reporter has reported that HBO Max's Green Lantern series is being redeveloped as it will now focus on John Stewart, instead of Guy Gardner and Alan Scott who were previously the main focuses of the series. Berlanti is still producing the new iteration of the project.
However, as a result of these creative changes, showrunner Seth Grahame-Smith exited the project despite completing the script for the eight episodes of the series. Finn Wittrock and Jeremy Irvine, who were previously cast as the leads, are also no longer attached to the series.
According to the report, the character of John Stewart was initially off the table to the producers when they decided to focus on Alan Scott and John Stewart. When Walter Hamada exited his position, they decided to start from scratch and revolve the series around John Stewart instead.
They also noted that the changes have nothing to do with the recent hiring of James Gunn and Peter Safran as the new heads of DC Studios since they are not slated to begin their duties until November 1. The project is also expected to have a lesser budget than what was previously proposed.
It is interesting to hear that the series is being retooled despite already completing the scripts since it would mean that the project will be put on the back burner and we have to wait a few more years again for the series to happen (assuming that it will still move forward).
With the new regime coming, it is curious to see whether the project will still stick since Gunn and Safran might have other plans on how they're bringing Green Lantern again to the screens whether it will still be on TV or a feature film instead.
