Harrison Ford is a certified grump when it comes to the projects that made him big, but after Han Solo died in The Force Awakens, he’s been open to revisiting past roles from films like Blade Runner and Indiana Jones.
With Dial of Destiny allegedly losing money despite the positive reception, Ford looks back and says he was still pretty happy he got to make the film.
Harrison Ford on Indiana Jones 5: “Shit Happens”
Talking to The Wall Street Journal, Ford says that he has no regrets about making the film, and mostly puts the blame on himself for wanting to keep telling Indy’s story. He says, "Shit happens… I was really the one who felt there was another story to tell. When [Indy] had suffered the consequences of the life that he had to live, I wanted one more chance to pick him up and shake the dust off his ass and stick him out there, bereft of some of his vigor, to see what happened. I’m still happy I made that movie."
If anything, the movie may still find some luck becoming a cult classic. After all, it was better received than Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and it was a legitimate character study of an older Indy from the director behind Logan.
No fan could ask for more.
A Dying Fanbase?
Despite its pop-culture status, the fanbase for Indiana Jones has admittedly gotten older, and fans are starting to think of ways to bring Indy to newer audiences. Besides the movies, there has been great buzz surrounding the recently released game Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.
There’s probably no chance that Phoebe Waller-Bridge would want to lead the Indy franchise moving forward, but if a recasting isn’t in the books, maybe it can live on as an animated movie series. Troy Baker already does a pretty great Indiana Jones.
Brave New World
Despite Ford’s tendency to be a grump about his most famous roles, he’s now jumped over to the Marvel arena to butt heads with the new Captain America Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie). It’s not clear how long he’s going to be in the MCU, but it’s possible this could be a one-and-done.
Then again, it could be too early to say. Some speculate that’s he’s still going to be a major factor when it comes to the formation of Marvel’s Thunderbolts (since the character is Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross). With Ross also wanting to reform the Avengers in Cap 4, some speculate that the real team name for Thunderbolts* is supposed to be ‘The Dark Avengers’.
If Ford did have roles that he enjoys, it’s probably that of smaller comedic roles like the one he plays in Apple TV+’s Shrinking. It’s just great to watch him be everyone’s grumpy grandpa who has nuggets of wisdom to share every now and then.
Catch Ford as the Red Hulk in Captain America: Brave New World when it hits theaters on Feb. 14.
