American actor Kal Penn has opened up about his sexuality for the first time. The 44-year-old actor, known for his role as Lawrence Kutner in the hit television show “House” and as Kumar Patel in the “Harold & Kumar” movies, also detailed his engagement to his long-time non-showbiz partner.

Penn, whose real name is Kalpen Suresh Modi, talked about his sexual orientation ahead of the release of his new memoir “You Can’t Be Serious.” In his interview with People magazine, Penn talked about how later in life, he had discovered his sexuality. He also talked about his 11-year relationship with his partner Josh and revealed to the world that they are now engaged and to be married.
The adviser to former U.S. President Barack Obama said he felt privileged to have received support when he initially came out as gay. He said he felt “very supported” by the people closest to him and his loved ones.
Kal Penn Found It Easy To Come Out As Gay
Penn said during the interview that he first came out as gay to his parents and close friends. He said everyone initially thought he was joking, but they eventually gave him their support once they knew he was serious about it. He went on to say that he knows everyone’s experience with coming out is different and that he feels “very fortunate” of how things had turned out.
Apart from revealing that he was gay, Penn also talked about how he had discovered his true sexuality late in life. He said there was no set age or time for when a person would discover their sexuality.
“There’s no timeline on this stuff. People figure their shit out at different times in their lives, so I’m glad I did when I did,” Penn said.

Kal Penn Teases About What Is In His New Book
In his upcoming candid tell-all book, which is set to come out Tuesday, Penn shares to the world how he discovered his sexuality and how he met his current partner when he moved to Washington, D.C.
Penn also describes in his book his first date with Josh, which involved drinking an 18-pack of Coors Light while watching NASCAR. Penn shares how he found their first date ridiculous and how funny everything turned out.
He said the two of them now spend Sundays watching NASCAR, and he wants to explain to readers the humor in all of the experiences he has had after finding out he was gay.
In the book, Penn also talks about how he rejected everyone’s advice, including those of his parents, who initially wanted him to be a doctor or “something practical. Penn chronicles his journey from becoming an actor to working as a farmhand and then becoming the adviser of a U.S. President.
