J.K. Rowling has defended British festival legend Dooze McDooze after he was harassed by trans individuals over his girlfriend’s gender identity beliefs.
The author posted her support on X, where she often shares statements about women’s safe spaces and trans activism, topics for which she frequently receives heavy criticism.
J.K. Rowling Backs Musician Doozer McDooze After Facing Harassment
J.K. Rowling spoke out in support of Doozer McDooze, a touring musician who’s being threatened with “cancellation” by transgender individuals.
He was targeted for “not silencing” his partner, the artist Birdy Rose, who shares similar views on gender identity issues with J.K. Rowling.
However, instead of expressing her views through writing like the Harry Potter author, Birdy Rose sells products and merchandise featuring her artwork online.
One of her most well-known pieces is a drawing of a child with text on the body that reads, “There is no such thing as a trans child.”
In recent months, more and more individuals from the trans community have been calling her out, especially after she filmed a protest against a recent Supreme Court ruling.
McDooze’s career and reputation have also taken a hit because of this, and he informed his followers on X about the harassment on May 18.
Rowling showed her support by posting a screenshot of his tweet and captioning it:
"Trans activists are trying to trash the career of musician @DoozerMcDooze because he hasn't silenced his female partner, who speaks up in defence of women's rights. I've just bought an album and a T-shirt at the link below. Be a shame if anyone else did."
McDooze responded with appreciation by quoting Rowling’s post and writing, “Thanks, I really like your books.”
His partner also commented under the author’s post, “Thank you. He’s the kindest man I know.”
People’s Reaction to J.K. Rowling Defending A Musician Who’s Under Fire
Since Rowling has shown support for McDooze, fans have commended the artist for standing by his partner. Some have said they donated to the artist, and even went ahead and bought his albums and merchandise.
A fan of the artist commented on Rowling’s post, “Thank you for standing up for Birdy and for Doozer. That he’s punished for who he loves shows EXACTLY who these activists are, and how far from ‘kindness and love’ they are.”
Meanwhile, people who support trans activism are questioning Rowling’s continued focus on the subject, urging her to “leave the trans community alone.”
“Why the obsession with trans issues, @jk_rowling? I'm genuinely curious, because it keeps coming up in my feed. For the record, I've never seen or read Harry Potter, but I heard people like the series, so congrats on your success,” a user on X stated.
Rowling publicly posted about her controversial views on transitioning back in 2020, when she reacted to an article titled ‘Opinion: Creating a More Equal Post-COVID-19 World for People Who Menstruate.’
The bestselling fantasy writer noted that there used to be a word for “people who menstruate,” and sarcastically wrote, “Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?”
