Earlier this week, word came out that Disney was looking for female directors for its upcoming Marvel movies. Now, new reports say that Marvel is hoping to hire director Michelle MacLaren for Captain Marvel 2.
According to a report by Hollywood insider Daniel Richtman ( via The Disinsider) who shared the news on Patreon, Marvel Studios is hoping to hire Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, and The Walking Dead episode director Michelle MacLaren to direct the highly-anticipated sequel to Captain Marvel.
While Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck did a decent job working on the first Captain Marvel standalone movie, the directorial duo is not set to return to direct the upcoming sequel.
Though MacLaren has only directed one feature-length film in her entire career, the filmmaker has established herself as an executive producer and as a TV series director. MacLaren has done phenomenal work on critically-acclaimed shows like Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead. MacLaren was one of Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan's main collaborators, and the episode director did exceptional work on the series.
The TV series director was recently set to direct Cowboy Ninja Viking, a Universal feature film starring Chris Pratt and Priyanka Chopra. Unfortunately, the film seems to be at a standstill thanks to production complications.
It's definitely interesting to hear that Marvel has approached MacLaren for Captain Marvel 2. While the original movie did relatively well, reviews were mixed. We're sure that MacLaren might be able to offer a better narrative for Carol Danvers (Brie Larson).
Captain Marvel 2 is expected to premiere July 8, 2022.
