There are many supergroups that exist in the world of K-pop. But, agencies do not regularly launch such acts, making the recent emergence of Girls On Top surprising news to the public.

SM Entertainment last introduced an all-female supergroup in 2018. Nevertheless, the label’s endeavor of launching project groups began with SM the Ballad in 2010.

It was not until 2019, though, that the agency reached new heights with a supergroup. This was the time when SuperM entered the scene and made a name for itself.

Two years later, SM Entertainment is seemingly aiming to reach the same flight with a new supergroup. AllKpop said that it recently introduced an all-female supergroup, likely serving as the girl version of SuperM.

The Seven Members Of Girls On Top

The official announcement surfaced on December 27. SM Entertainment said that its new female supergroup will carry the name, “Girls On Top.”

It houses a total of seven South Korean artists, with one of them a known soloist. These are Winter and Karina of aespa, Seulgi and Wendy of Red Velvet, Taeyeon and Hyoyeon of Girls’ Generation, and BoA.

The same announcement included a photo of the seven celebrities. It marks the supergroup’s first photo ever as they make their way into the K-pop world.

Future Activities And Projects

There is little information about Girls On Top. But, the announcement included some details about their upcoming activities.

NME reported that the new supergroup will make its first official special stage performance on January 1. A new song will then follow on January 3, at 6 p.m., KST.

It remains unclear, though, what other music productions they have in store for the public. Even so, more details will likely emerge in the next few weeks.

Other K-pop Supergroups From SM Entertainment

Ahead of the new supergroup’s official debut, fans and followers of the members are already seemingly referring to them as the female version of SuperM. SM Entertainment launched the all-male supergroup in 2019, comprising K-pop idols from SHINee, NCT 127, WayV, and EXO.

Girls On Top, meanwhile, follows the all-female project group, Station Young. Its members are Chungha, Soyeon of (G)I-DLE, Seulgi of Red Velvet, and SinB of GFriend.
