Taeyeon is like a fire that never loses its spark even after 16 years as she returns with a pre-release digital single that immediately dominated global iTunes charts upon its release.
The Girls’ Generation leader and main vocalist had just dropped her new digital single “Can’t Control Myself” on January 17, and she once again proved herself as the “queen of digital charts.”
In particular, the single soars high in iTunes charts in several countries worldwide. “Can’t Control Myself” sees itself on top of the iTunes Top Song Chart in 14 countries, including Thailand, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Peru, Macau, Malta, Bahrain, and the Philippines.
The pre-release single also ranked in good places on several domestic music charts, including Genie, Bugs, and Melon.
Taeyeon returns better than ever
Taeyeon’s pre-release digital single “Can’t Control Myself” is a catchy pop-punk ballad with appealing guitar tones. In the introduction, Taeyeon spoke calmly about her adversary, which was so insane it was impossible to contain.
She then amplified her emotional line and appeal by increasing her vocal intensity to match the escalating sound.
To put it another way, Taeyeon wanted to create a huge change in her career by picking a genre and vocal style that contrasted starkly with her earlier songs while maintaining her distinct and appealing tone.
Frankly, this was not a safe move for the vocalist. However, Taeyeon had proved herself to be a versatile singer that refused to confine herself to a single genre or singing style. And instead, performs a wide range of hit songs in her own unique musical color.
Specifically, her debut track “I” was a major turning point in her career as a solo artist. Some more of her phenomenal releases were the soulful jazz “Rain,” the tropical house pop “Why,” the urban neo-soul pop “Something New,” the emotional alternative pop “Four Seasons,” and the warm R&B pop “Happy.”
Taeyeon as a flexible vocalist
Taeyeon’s turn to flexibly modify her appearance in each song, even though it has been 16 years since her debut, is somewhat unfamiliar yet very satisfying to watch. This makes fans and the general public surprised and intrigued by her flexibility as a female solo artist.
She has already reached an unrivaled level in music charts and in terms of album sales. In particular, Taeyeon has sold over a million albums six years after her debut as a soloist. According to Gaon Chart, it is the highest album sales among female solo artists in the Kpop industry.
Taeyeon’s creative actions merit recognition in and of themselves, regardless of her numerical successes. She has since begun her singing career in 2007 as the main vocalist of Girls’ Generation, which has emerged as a representative Kpop group with countless hit songs such as “Gee,” “Genie,” “I Got A Boy,” “Hoot,” and “Into The New World.”
In addition, Taeyeon also joined SM Entertainment’s new project girl group unit GOT the Beat alongside fellow Girls’ Generation member Hyoyeon, BoA, Red Velvet members Wendy and Seulgi, and aespa members Karina and Winter.
Meanwhile, Taeyeon's pre-release digital single "Can't Control Myself" was uploaded on January 17 at 6:00 PM KST, and will appear on her upcoming 3rd full album, which will be released in February 2022.
