After reviving the Ghostbusters franchise with Ghostbusters: Afterlife in 2021, Sony Pictures brings back our favorite ghost hunters along with the Spengler family's return on the big screen with Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Here is everything you need to know about Frozen Empire's release date, cast, trailer, plot, and more!
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Release Date: When is the Next Ghostbusters Family Premiering?
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is the upcoming sequel to 2021's Ghostbusters: Afterlife. After having been referred to as Afterlife 2 this entire time, the classic '80s franchise returns to theaters with its titular name soon.
Initially scheduled to premiere on December 20th, 2023, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has been moved to hit theaters on March 29, 2024, instead.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Cast: Who is Starring in the All-New Installment?
Similar to how Ghostbusters: Afterlife revived the franchise, the film also brought back our favorite ghostbusting team: Dan Aykroyd as Dr. Raymond Stantz, Bill Murray as Dr. Peter Venkman, Ernie Hudson as Dr. Winston Zeddemore, Annie Potts as Janine Melnitz, and William Atherton as Walter Peck.
The only original Ghostbuster not returning to Frozen Empire is Sigourney Weaver, who played the Ghostbusters' first customer Dana Barrett in the first two movies and later reprised that role in Afterlife as a cameo.
As for the main cast of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, we'll be seeing Egon Spangler's family including McKenna Grace as Egon's granddaughter, Phoebe, Finn Wolfhard as Egon's grandson, Trevor, and Carrie Coon as Egon's daughter, Callie.
Paul Rudd has also been confirmed to return as the kids' school teacher and Callie's potential partner Grooberson, along with Logan Kim as Phoebe's best friend Podcast, and Celeste O'Connor's friend, Lucky.
This Ghostbusters sequel also has Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, James Acaster, and Emily Alyn Lind in undisclosed roles as part of the new faces joining the film.
Who is the Creative Team Behind Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire?
James Reitman began helming Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire after his father, Ivan Reitman, brought Ghostbusters: Afterlife on the big screens.
This time, Ivan is leaving the director's chair for Gil Kenan (Monster House), while the former is co-writing and co-producing with Kenan.
There are two original Afterlife crew members also involved in making Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, namely, Jason Blumenfeld (Tully) as co-producer and Eric Steelberg (Juno) as the cinematographer.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Plot: What is the Story Behind the Next Ghostbuster Adventure?
As it so happens, since Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is the direct sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the story will pick up after the events of the previous film.
Here's the official synopsis for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire:
"It'll send a chill down your spine. In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the Spengler family returns to where it all started - the iconic New York City firehouse - to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who've developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level. But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age."
