George Clooney recently revealed that he is no longer starring in romantic movies anymore as he enters a new chapter of his career.
The beloved Hollywood A-lister has been swooning audiences for decades thanks to his starring roles in various genres whether it's drama, comedy, romance, or action.
George Clooney Says He's Not Doing Romantic Movies Anymore
In his recent interview on 60 Minutes promoting his new Broadway play Good Night, and Good Luck, Clooney reflected on playing Edward R. Murrow in the adaptation now that he is age-appropriate for the role.
"Murrow had a gravitas to him that at 42 years old I didn’t — I wasn’t able to pull off," he said.
The Hollywood A-lister went on to say that he is no longer interested in doing roles that are more appropriate for younger actors such as in a romantic movie and he is no longer doing projects in that genre.
"Look, I’m 63 years old. I’m not trying to compete with 25-year-old leading men. That’s not my job. I’m not doing romantic films anymore," Clooney added.
This is not the first time that Clooney opened up about the future of romantic movie roles in his career.
In a 2022 interview, he shared that he followed Paul Newman's playbook when it comes to navigating a career as an older actor after years of starring in romantic movies.
"[Paul] Newman was the best at this. He figured out, [with] The Verdict, quite honestly, that he was a character actor and he accepted that role," Clooney said.
"He didn’t fight it or push and try to get his face done or look younger and act younger. He just said, ‘Okay, that’s who I am now,’ and he changed expectations a little bit."
George Clooney's History with Romantic Movies
Clooney made his last starring role in a romantic movie in 2022's Ticket to Paradise where he stars opposite Julia Roberts.
However, in the past 20 years, he has rarely starred in romantic movies as he focused more on dramatic roles or directing films across different genres (aside from romance).
With this statement, Ticket to Paradise is now most likely to be Clooney's final romantic movie in his illustrious career. He has fully transitioned into a different chapter of his career where he is playing age-appropriate roles.
He is set to star next in the upcoming Noah Baumbach film Jay Kelly which is described as a coming-of-age tale of two middle-aged friends.
