A new report revealed that Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa's home had a rodent infestation during the time of their passing.
For the past several weeks, there have been investigations into the circumstances surrounding the late couple's deaths, and reports from authorities eventually revealed that they likely passed weeks before their bodies were discovered.
Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa's Property Had a Rodent Infestation
According to a CNN report, records obtained from the New Mexico Department of Public Health revealed that there was a rodent infestation in Hackman and Arakawa's property.
The hantavirus risk assessment that they conducted had findings of dead rodents and rodent nests throughout eight detached outbuildings.
This investigation took place in March when medical examiners concluded that Harakawa passed away from hantavirus.
The report revealed that rodent feces were found in three garages, two casitas, and three sheds. A live rodent, a dead rodent, and a rodent nest were found in the three detached garages.
Meanwhile, in the primary residence, there were no signs of rodent activity, and it was clean.
Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa's Cause of Death
It was announced by New Mexico authorities that autopsy reports from medical examiners have ruled Hackman and Arakawa's deaths to be from natural causes.
Arakawa died first from hantavirus in their New Mexico home, while Hackman passed away a week later due to heart disease.
Hackman also had severe signs of advanced Alzheimer’s disease, so he was likely not aware that his wife had already died during his final days. His pacemaker last showed signs of activity on February 18, around a week before their bodies were discovered.
Meanwhile, their dog Zinna died due to dehydration and starvation, according to a report obtained from the veterinary lab. The stomach was mostly empty except for small amounts of hair and bile.
