The anticipation for the Legend of Zelda live-action movie builds as Nintendo recently shared more updates about the film, and fans are already pushing for Hunter Schafer to play Princess Zelda.
With the casting details yet to be released, people are already linking famous names to the live adaptation of this beloved Nintendo classic and suggesting actors they believe would be perfect for the roles.
Strong Fan Support for Hunter Schafer as Zelda in The Legend of Zelda
Fans of The Legend of Zelda think Hunter Schafer should be cast as Zelda in the live-action movie.
The fan casting request began in 2022 when the Euphoria star attended the Vanity Fair Oscar Party, where she wore a denim dress and showcased a half-up hairstyle similar to the iconic elf princess.
An X user with the handle @skyferrori posted, "If Nintendo ever needs a Princess Zelda, she can do the job," along with a picture of Schafer from the event.
Now, with Nintendo sharing updates on the film’s release date and director, people are once again suggesting celebrities they believe should take on the roles — one of the names fans continue to rally behind is Schafer.
One X user posted, "They literally have one job, and it’s to get Hunter Schafer to play Zelda. PLEASE." This tweet by @redsagexxv has already amassed 4,700 retweets and 101,000 likes as of writing.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight in 2023 while promoting The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Schafer seemed open to the idea.
"I mean, yes, that would be cool. Like an elf? Yeah," the actress said.
She added, "I love the game, personally. I played it as a kid and still play it now. Who knows? That would be pretty cool."
Aside from Schafer, fans are also calling for Grammy winner Mike Faist to play Link, the protagonist of the games and the film.
What We Know So Far About The Legend of Zelda Movie
On March 28, Nintendo shared new details about The Legend of Zelda movie through its Nintendo Today app as the Nintendo Direct March 2025 took place.
Set to be released worldwide on March 26, 2027, The Legend of Zelda will be directed by Wes Ball, known for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and The Maze Runner series.
The popular video game’s creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, along with Sony Pictures, first confirmed the project in 2023. During the announcement, he also revealed that he would be producing it with Marvel Studios founder Avi Arad.
If the movie stays true to the Nintendo game, the story should take place in Hyrule, a realm created by the three goddesses who also made the Triforce, a powerful relic that grants wishes. This is the land where Link embarks on adventures and faces challenges to rescue Princess Zelda from the evil Ganondorf.
In a 2024 interview with GamesRadar, director Wes Ball shared his vision for the movie:
"I’ve been thinking about it for a long freakin’ time, of how cool a Zelda movie would be. I want to fulfill people’s greatest desires. I know this franchise is important to people, and I want it to be a serious movie. A real movie that can give people an escape."
He also added that what he wants to create has to feel realistic. "Something serious and cool, but fun and whimsical."
