The Avengers will once again assemble in the highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday. But although it will still take about a year before the sequel hits the big screen, Chris Hemsworth has released a video tribute to his character as Thor, seemingly hinting at the end of the God of Thunder in the MCU.
What Did Chris Hemsworth Say About Thor?
On Thursday, May 28, Hemsworth shared a video titled Thank You! The Legacy of Thor on YouTube to celebrate his journey in the MCU.
The almost two-minute clip features behind-the-scenes footage of his time in Marvel, from the screen test in 2009 to the latest 2022 film Thor: Love and Thunder.
It also features clips from his solo Thor films and Avengers appearances, along with cameos from other MCU stars like Natalie Portman and Tessa Thompson.
Even Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige himself was there.
“Playing Thor has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” his caption reads. “For the last 15 years I've held Mjolnir and then Stormbreaker as the God of Thunder, but what made it truly special… was sharing it with all of you.”
The Australian actor added that fans’ passion, cheers, and love for his character “meant everything to me.”
“Thank you for making my journey through the Marvel Cinematic Universe unforgettable…” he continued. “Next up, Doomsday!”
Will Thor Die in Avengers: Doomsday?
Hemsworth’s heartfelt message about Thor has ignited widespread speculation about his time as one of the iconic heroes in the MCU.
With that being said, there are theories that the God of Thunder may die in Avengers: Doomsday. In fact, the 41-year-old star himself has seemingly suggested that it might be time for Thor to die—if he were to return.
In an interview with Vanity Fair in 2022, it would “probably be the finale” of Thor’s MCU journey if he would do another movie again.
“You have this birth of a hero, the journey of a hero, then the death of a hero, and I don't know—am I at that stage? Who knows?” he teased.
Doomsday will mark Hemsworth’s return to the MCU after Love and Thunder. In fact, he was the first actor announced to be part of the film.
So, judging by his past comments and recent statement, the fifth Avengers film might be the end of his character.
How Do Fans React to Chris Hemsworth’s Thor Tribute?
Hemsworth’s tribute to Thor sounds a lot like a goodbye as he prepares to return for Doomsday, which is currently in production. So, it’s no surprise that fans are having strong emotional reactions.
X user @Hawkmaestro21 can’t help but ask if this will be the end of Thor, wanting the character to “go in an epic way that doesn’t involve killing him off.”
@mjolnirsam, in addition, finds it hard to believe that Hemsworth speaks about Thor as the character will die in Doomsday.
@josh14177313, lastly, didn’t want Marvel Studios to let of go Thor and wanted the Extraction star to play the character till he’s 90—very much like Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.
As Hemsworth prepares for Doomsday, it looks like he also wants fans to brace themselves for what the film might hold for Thor.
