The hit CBS series Elsbeth recently premiered its season 2 premiere, ending on an interesting cliffhanger with the presence of a mystery man.
As Elsbeth Tascioni was walking her dog in a public park, a mysterious black van stopped in front of her and we heard an off-screen voice of a man invite her to go inside.
Who is the Mystery Man in the Final Scene of Elsbeth Season 2 Premiere?
The mystery man in the final scene of the premiere episode of Elsbeth season 2 is no other than returning The Good Wife and The Good Fight fan-favorite character Carter Schmidt.
Christian Borle is reprising the role when we see him on-screen again in next week's episode.
He is the first colleague of Elsbeth from Chicago who will show up in the spinoff series. As long-time fans of The Good Wife know, Elsbeth and Carter have a history in the past.
While it remains to be seen how Carter's appearance in Elsbeth will play out, it is an exciting comeback for fans of the franchise and this paves the way for more potential returning characters from The Good Wife.
However, we've also seen since the first season that Elsbeth is open to bringing back actors from the previous two shows in a different role this time, and they have no specific rules about their in-universe connections.
What to Expect in Carter Schmidt's Major Return in Elsbeth
In an interview, showrunner Jonathan Tolins explained what they have in store with Carter's return in Elsbeth and how it will affect the titular character's new life in New York City.
"Well, we don't really fully know why Elsbeth left Chicago, the specifics of what it was that happened," he teased.
"This person in the car is going to bring something up from her past, and so we will be able to get a little bit more specific about what it is that she was perhaps fleeing from,"
Executive producer Michelle King also explained in another interview that Carter's appearance could lead to more connections to Elsbeth's past in Chicago and they are now more open to bringing back The Good Wife character in season 2.
"It’s things that maybe [Elsbeth] hasn’t wanted to think about too much, but they catch up," she shared.
"It is a very distinct, different type of show and different type of world and I think that’s why we were so strict in Season 1 of, no, it needs to be clear. This is its own world."
"But now that it is clear, there is the possibility," executive producer Robert King added.
