Eiza González recently appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show, wearing a Blue Lagoon-inspired skirt while being interviewed by Brooke Shields.
Although intended as a tribute, González faced criticism for replicating the host’s outfit from her most controversial movie.

Eiza González Appears on The Kelly Clarkson Show Wearing a Blue Lagoon-Inspired Outfit
Eiza González made an appearance as a guest on the March 11 episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, where Brooke Shields filled in for Kelly Clarkson, who is on a temporary break from hosting.
The actress discussed her new indie horror film with Aaron Paul, Ash, and shared how she was removed from the children's show Sesame Street when she was a “hyperactive” 5-year-old.
However, some viewers found the intro of the episode “awkward” when González and Shields talked about the outfit the Baby Driver star was wearing.
The 35-year-old singer-songwriter greeted the audience and sat down before saying, “By the way, I wore this for you,” to which Shields responded, “Oh goodness, thank you.”
González then asked the Pretty Baby star what the tulle skirt resembled, and Shields hesitantly replied, “My outfit in Blue Lagoon.”
The Mexican actress exclaimed, “Yes!” and confirmed that her look was inspired by the movie. Shields replied, “Oh my gosh, that was a lot more covered than I was.”
González admitted she couldn’t “live up to the hair” and used fake tulle instead. Shields then recalled how her hair was taped to her body in the 1980 film.
Shields went on to explain, “Yeah, they had to tape it to my boobs because if the wind blew, it was like, woo!” The guest laughed and responded, “Yeah, yeah, you're like, 'None of that.'”
“There wasn’t much! There wasn’t much there,” Shields concluded, before shifting the conversation to González's brief stint on Sesame Street.
Brooke Shields' Controversial Blue Lagoon Role
González’s tribute to Shields’ role was met with plenty of laughs from the live audience. However, others who have watched Blue Lagoon and are aware of the controversy surrounding it felt that the 3 Body Problem star’s actions were “disrespectful.”
For those who haven’t seen the romantic drama, the story revolves around two preteens who become shipwrecked on an isolated island, played by Shields and Christopher Atkins.
The film captures the themes of innocence transitioning into adulthood in an unconventional situation and is praised for its cinematography. However, many believed older actors should have been cast in the lead roles, as Shields was only about 14 at the time of filming.
What’s more, Shields and Atkins portrayed cousins who fell in love and eventually had a child.
González faced criticism for wearing an outfit that “symbolizes her trauma,” according to one TikTok user. Shields revealed in her documentary, Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields, that being sexualized at a young age under the management of her alcoholic mother left her traumatized.
One user commented, “The way I would never bring up Blue Lagoon to that woman,” while another remarked, “She obviously isn’t a real fan… cause WHAAAAAT?!” suggesting González might be unaware of the controversy.
Still, some defended the guest, with one commenter saying, “I’m 49 and have never heard the backstory and have always loved that movie. I’m sure if she knew, she wouldn’t have done that.”
