What if Finn's story had gone in a completely different direction? Actor John Boyega has shed light on his initial expectations for Finn's arc in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, a concept that now has many fans wondering if it would have been a more satisfying path for the character.
Read on to find out!
What Did John Boyega Expect From Finn’s Star Wars Arc?
Even after years of coming to fruition, Boyega is not afraid to share his thoughts on how different their original Star Wars ideas were from what unfolded on the big screens, and he’s not yet done with fixing Finn’s journey.
During a panel at Fan Expo Boston (via Screen Rant), Boyega revealed he thought Finn would have a mode Jedi-centered story after The Force Awakens. He surmised that Finn and Rey would have turned against each other, as hinted in the 2015 movie’s hints:
“I think I assumed he was Force-sensitive from The Force Awakens script or at least by the time I got to the end of The Force Awakens script,” Boyega explained.

He added that a duel between two Jedis would have been made possible: “I thought they were planning dual Jedis. I actually thought that they would Obi-Wan and Darth Vader us a bit. That we would turn against each other or something along those lines.”
Despite The Force Awakens being generally well-received compared to its two sequels, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, the sequel trilogy remained controversial after the decision was made to scrap Finn’s Jedi journey and instead focus only on Rey’s.
This isn’t the first time Boyega has expressed his disappointing experience in the Star Wars Universe.
What Else Has John Boyega Said About His Star Wars Experience?

Apart from being sidelined in the franchise, Boyega dropped his frustrations about the lack of a clear plan across the trilogy, which fans happened to agree with. Still, his opinions don’t mean he wants nothing to do with the galaxy far, far away. If anything, he embraces joining its universe.
Recently, he even hinted at Fan Expo Philadelphia that Finn might just receive the spotlight he’s long overdue for:
“So for me, everybody knows, it’s dependent on treating the character well, it’s dependent on fulfilling the arc that was teased quite a lot during the process,” Boyega said, “And hopefully, this time, it’s them approaching it by having a plan of what they’re gonna do throughout the whole series.”
As of writing, nothing is in the plans yet for Finn’s journey. But don’t let that get written off as a permanent decision! Finn might just have the potential to be the Jedi he’s fated to be, if Lucasfilm does things right next time.
