Kafka and Reno Dream of Joining the Defense Force in Kaiju No. 8
Kafka Hibino has given up on his aim of becoming a Defense Force officer with Captain Mina Ashiro of the Third Division.
He has been living comfortably in his apartment with food on the table for quite some time, but a part of him craves more thrills and excitement from the Kaiju that destroyed his hometown.
After all, Kafka promised Mina that he would wipe out all of the Kaiju in the world with her, but now he works for a Kaiju cleanup company that wants him to dismantle repulsive innards.
He attempted to join the Defense Force recruitment but failed the examinations, and that was the end of it. He never applied again since he believed he had done his best and had reached the limit of how far he could go in life.
Reno Ichikawa is the polar opposite of Kafka Hibino. He is a newcomer to the cleanup industry, but he has bigger goals than everyone else. He's the type of guy who never gives up, so he'll never understand why Kafka abandons his aspirations so easily.

Once they have passed, they should move on to the second stage of the exam, which is separated into two parts: physical and aptitude examinations.
After passing the first step, Kafka and Reno were eligible to advance to the second stage.
Despite finishing dead last in the physical exam and having 0% suit aptitude, Kafka was able to join the Defense Force as a cadet thanks to the vice captain's sympathies.
Reno, on the other hand, passed normally like the other test takers, as shown in chapter 10 of the manga.
