Serena Williams has set the record straight on whether she was throwing shade at Drake in her cameo during Kendrick Lamar's Super Bowl halftime performance.
The tennis icon notably made an appearance during the "Not Like Us" segment of Lamar's performance, where she was seen briefly dancing. Fans have speculated that her cameo might have been a diss to Drake since they dated in the past.
Serena Williams Clarifies Super Bowl Halftime Cameo
In a recent interview with Time Magazine, Williams addressed the speculations that her cameo in Lamar's Super Bowl halftime performance was a diss on Drake.
She clarified that she was "absolutely not" trying to diss her ex Drake when she appeared in the performace.
"I would never do that. "And that was sad, that anyone would ever think that. I respect how they could," the tennis icon said.
"Obviously, I can see how someone would think that. But absolutely not. I have never had negative feelings towards him. We've known him for so many years."
When asked if she stands by her appearance in the performance, Williams responded, "I don't know if I regret it or not. I don't know the answer to that."
Why Serena Williams Agreed to Cameo in Kendrick Lamar's Super Bowl Halftime Performance?
During the interview, Williams explained how she ended up appearing in Lamar's Super Bowl halftime show performance.
"We've been trying to do something together for ages," she said of her friendship with the Grammy-winning rapper.
"I'm like, 'Wait, what, you're asking me?' I'm not Taylor Swift, let's be honest. I would have a better chance to be quarterback at the Super Bowl than dance."
In the end, Williams decided to agree to join Lamar on the halftime show stage to represent her hometown.
"Who would have thought that a tennis player from Compton would be regarded as one of the best tennis players of all time? It was just putting an exclamation on it," she said.
