Nine years after the planned Deadpool & Cable X-Men spin-off was shelved, creator Rob Liefeld has finally shared new details about the project.

Marvel greenlit the movie in 2017, with Liefeld set to lead it. The project would have introduced several new concepts, including ideas that later evolved into Major X.

However, the spin-off was ultimately canceled before it was publicly announced–with the cancellation being linked to Disney's acquisition of 21st Century Fox. So, what really happened behind the scenes?

The debut of X-Force in X-Men '97 Season 2 has renewed interest in the live-action X-Force movie, not knowing there was a canceled Deadpool & Cable X-Men spin-off.

While responding to fans on X, Rob Liefeld revealed that a live-action X-Force movie had been in development at Fox before it was ultimately scrapped.

He even claimed the project was "denied by [Kevin] Feige," adding that fans instead "got The Marvels and whatever Cap 4 was!!!"

For context, Feige took creative control of the X-Men franchise after Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019.

When another fan expressed surprise, Liefeld shared more details, revealing that Drew Goddard had already written the screenplay and that Stryfe–Cable's arch-enemy in the comics–was set to be the film's main villain.

He also said several key elements of the movie had already been finalized, with Fox still holding the X-Men film rights during development and Goddard attached to direct the project.

Liefeld's comments align with a 2017 report from Deadline, which revealed that Fox had hired Goddard to write and direct an X-Force movie centered on Deadpool and Cable, with Ryan Reynolds, Simon Kinberg, and Lauren Shuler Donner attached as producers.

Deadpool & Cable

While the plot of the canceled Deadpool & Cable movie was never revealed, it may have drawn inspiration from Cable & Deadpool, a Marvel Comics series that ran from 2004 to 2008 for 50 issues.

The comic follows the unlikely partnership between two very different mutants who are forced to work together despite their opposite personalities.

Cable is a disciplined soldier who dreams of creating a peaceful future, while Deadpool is a wisecracking mercenary who thrives on chaos and unpredictability.

Despite their differences, the pair team up to battle powerful enemies and travel through time and alternate realities.

But although they frequently clash over their morals and methods, Cable and Deadpool gradually develop an unlikely friendship while never losing their trademark banter.
