The filmmakers of Deadpool and Wolverine originally had a different villain in mind before they settled with Cassandra Nova.
One of the elements that fans have been looking forward to in the upcoming MCU film is the arrival of Cassandra Nova, who is making her first live-action appearance.
Marvel fans know that Cassandra Nova is a dangerous threat to any heroes who are facing her, and they've been curious to see how she will be portrayed in Deadpool and Wolverine, especially in a multiversal storyline.
Mephisto Was Considered for the Villain of Deadpool and Wolverine
In a recent interview, Deadpool and Wolverine director Shawn Levy revealed that they flirted with the idea of Mephisto being the film's main villain before they decided to go with Cassandra Nova.
"We went through a lot of 'almost' versions of this story before we landed. Frankly, it was the infamous call from Hugh [Jackman]," he explained.
"But then it was this idea of Cassandra Nova as a sibling to Charles because Cassandra's link to Professor X creates an interesting dynamic and fascination in Cassandra about you [to Jackman]."
Ryan Reynolds added, "And also just the imagery in the comics of Cassandra."
In hindsight, Mephisto might have been a wacky choice for a Deadpool and Wolverine villain since he's not the type of figure that you might think of as an antagonist in this type of MCU movie or a multiversal storytelling.
Fortunately for fans, it looks like Mephisto will finally make his MCU debut as reports have suggested that he will be making an appearance in Ironheart with Sacha Baron Cohen playing him.
The character has long been rumored to be making his debut in the MCU starting with WandaVision where it was speculated that he would be the big baddie which ultimately did not happen.
It is exciting to see what the film has in store with Cassandra Nova, and how formidable will she be as a threat to the titular heroes as they navigate the multiverse.
Deadpool and Wolverine is set to arrive in theaters this Friday, July 26.
