Deadpool and Wolverine may have had a lot of cameos, from the most obscure mutants to the Daywalker Blade himself. Even more hero cameos were planned to appear, but they didn't work out in the end.
It was said that other heroes like Ben Affleck’s Daredevil and Nicolas Cage’s Ghost Rider were asked to appear, and though those cameos never happened, some concept art for the film imagines what the clash with the Deadpool Corps would have looked like with the veteran Fox heroes.
Deadpool and Wolverine Concept Art Features Ghost Rider, Daredevil, and More
Concept artist @rodneyimages shared some concept art for the movie on Instagram, and it looks like the clash with the Corps could have been more bombastic, with the Fox heroes and more variants of Deadpool—including Dinopool.
Check this out:
Besides Blade and Elektra, who showed up in the final movie, the concept art gave us a look at Daredevil and Ghost Rider fighting off the DP variants. It’s also worth noting that Johnny Storm/Human Torch is also part of this sequence—which means that they probably weren’t planning for him to die early into the film.
Then again, Deadpool himself mentions that it would have been too expensive to keep Chris Evans for longer than they did.
Why Weren’t There More Heroes?
The film was meant to be a sendoff of the Marvel Fox universe, and director Shawn Levy confirmed that there was an entire list of characters they wanted to bring back—it was just a matter of who would say yes.
Levy said Ben Affleck was courted to return as Daredevil, but talks fell through. It would also be awkward for Affleck to work with his ex-wife, Jennifer Garner, who played Elektra.
As for Nicolas Cage's appearance, Levy confirmed with HSC Pod that they tried to get Cage to reprise the Spirit of Vengeance. He explains that it “came to a conversation for sure. Yeah, but no.”
Oddly enough, some Marvel Fox veterans said they would have been interested in appearing in the film but weren’t asked to. Blake Lively (Ladypool) asked Halle Berry if she was interested in reprising Storm for the movie, but as she explains to ComicBook:
"Blake [Lively] asked me one time, I ran into her at a Marc Jacobs fashion show, and she said, 'Would you ever be in my husband's movie as Storm?' I said, 'Yeah, if he asked me,' but he never asked me."
Deadpool and Wolverine has grossed a billion worldwide and is a certified hit at the box office. Though they didn’t go as wild as they could with the cameos, fans speculate that Marvel is waiting to play that card in the eventual Avengers: Secret Wars movie.
Hopefully, none of the main players will get into a huge scandal in the next few years because the whole fiasco with Jonathan Majors has cost Marvel a lot regarding everything they’ve developed and set up since Endgame.
Deadpool and Wolverine is now showing in theaters.
