David Corenswet recently shared the advice that he received from Henry Cavill and Tyler Hoechlin when he was cast as the DCU's Superman.
The actor took over the mantle of the Man of Steel in the new Superman film directed by James Gunn. His casting came on the heels of Cavill's last hurrah as Superman in the DCEU and the finale of Hoechlin's Superman & Lois series.
What Advice Did David Corenswet Receive from Ex-Superman Actors Henry Cavill and Tyler Hoechlin?
In an interview with Beat 102 (via EW), Corenswet revealed that he exchanged messages with Cavill and Hoechlin to ask for tips from them on playing Superman.
"I had the pleasure of exchanging letters with two previous Supermans, Henry Cavill and Tyler Hoechlin," he said at the London red carpet premiere.
"Both of them, interestingly, sort of said in their own words, 'I'm not gonna try to give you any tips.' And I think that's a very Superman thing."
While they didn't give him direct advice, Cavill and Hoechlin offered "encouragement" on Corenswet.
"Superman's not so much for giving advice or dictating how other people should be. They really just conveyed to me an encouragement and a sense of 'have fun with it,' which I think is Supermans way of doing it too. We had a lovely exchange and I'm excited to meet them one day," he said.
What to Expect in James Gunn's Superman?
Superman serves as the first film in the new DCU franchise under the direction of DC Studios chairmen James Gunn and Peter Safran.
The film will have Gunn's singular blend of epic action, humor, and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.
Aside from Corenswet, the cast includes Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, María Gabriela de Faría, Wendell Pierce, and Alan Tudyk.
Corenswet told EW that his approach to Superman's personality will closely align with Gunn's vision for the film.
"I had the same ideas about Superman, that he's quite reserved and has ultimate control over his emotions and his reactions to things," he explained.
"I was very excited when James said all of that is true about Superman, but we get to meet him in this moment where those things are least true. That's where he's a little bit of Superman, he's a little bit of Clark — because the only other person in the room knows who he is and holds all the cards."
