The Rage Virus isn't quite finished with its franchise fans just yet. After 28 Years Later and its sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, premiered, fans of the post-apocalyptic horror franchise have been eagerly awaiting news on whether the full trilogy would come to fruition.
Director Danny Boyle has now provided a reassuring update for horror enthusiasts, teasing that the final chapter remains on track.
28 Years Later Part 3 Will Likely Happen, Danny Boyle Teased

Despite box-office fluctuations surrounding The Bone Temple, Danny Boyle reassured fans that a third film is in active development. Speaking on the project's potential to come to fruition, Boyle revealed that franchise screenwriter Alex Garland has already penned a "very good script" for the threequel.
"28 Years 3 or whatever it ends up being called, will get made because people keep asking about it," Boyle told Variety in a recent interview. "Quite when I'm not sure, but there's a script – a very good script by Alex Garland."
Boyle also added that the trilogy will feature Cillian Murphy, who originated Jim's role in 2002's 28 Days Later: "[It will have] a lot of Cillian Murphy in it. Whether he'll take his kit off anymore, that I don't know. He's got the Oscar now."
While production was originally supposed to start at an earlier pace, seasonal lighting requirements for British filming locations pushed filming to 2027. However, with a finished screenplay and a vision for the trilogy, the team remains adamant about bringing the franchise to its planned ending.
How The Bone Template Could Lead to a 28 Years Later Trilogy
The foundation of The Bone Temple sets up a major shift for the franchise.
While the initial installment focused on family survival, The Bone Temple explored the darker nature of evil; director Nia DaCosta and writer Alex Garland designed the overarching story arc to move toward redemption in the final entry.
With the surprise reintroduction of Jim (Cillian Murphy) at the end of The Bone Temple, the story brings the franchise full circle, leaving the upcoming third film to uncover how Jim's survival experience overlapped with the younger generation of survivors.
By shifting the cult conflict to the typically broader struggle for humanity's future, Garland's script promises to deliver an epic conclusion to the 28-year saga. Soon. Stay tuned!
