Giving Importance to Film’s Minor Characters
Fans will see the return of a younger Ralph (Nick Cordileone) in Crystal Lake. Known for warning locals about the impending doom in Friday the 13th, his presence shows how the series intends to connect directly to the original film.
While Ralph was never a major character, he was often the person people quoted. In the original movie, he would usually arrive unannounced to warn a group of counselors that the camp carried a death curse.
Ralph would be accompanied by the two counselors killed in the first film’s opening scene, Claudette (Danielle Kotch) and Barry (Phoenix Parnevik). They would also be joined by Dorf (Cameron Scoggins), a strict, no-nonsense local police officer in Crystal Lake who previously worked as a big-city motorcycle cop.
As these four are only minor characters in the film, and the series still takes the time to include them in the story instead of introducing an entirely new roster, Crystal Lake appears to be staying closely connected to the original film’s lore.
Ditching the Hockey Mask
The hockey mask has been synonymous with Jason’s identity. However, fans will not see the franchise’s most recognizable object in Crystal Lake, with showrunner Brad Caleb Kane clarifying that the series is not about “Jason in the hockey mask.”
As the mask didn’t appear until the 1982 installment Friday the 13th Part III, and the series serves as a prequel, it will not be featured here.
This time, viewers are about to see a different, younger version of Jason, with his face uncovered just like in the first two movies.
Giving Pamela a Backstory
In Friday the 13th, Pamela was only seen in the final act as a grieving mother who was behind the killings. Those were the only things known about her at the time.
Crystal Lake is about to change that by giving her a backstory. This time, she will be introduced as a cook at Camp Crystal Lake, while her 11-year-old son Jason takes part in the summer activities despite his physical limitations.
Pamela works hard to give Jason a summer outdoors with other children until the unthinkable happens and changes everything.
Also, unlike the slasher films, the series will be more like a psychological and paranoid 1970s thriller from the mistrust-of-institutions era.
So while it has the DNA of a slasher, it is still quite different from one, with the killings arriving later and the series not relying too heavily on blood and gore, giving the franchise a fresh take.
A Different Timeline
If there’s one major change Crystal Lake makes to the franchise, it’s the series’ timeline. Friday the 13th established that Jason drowned in 1957, while Pamela killed the two counselors in 1958.
However, in the series, Jason drowns in 1971, and the story continues into 1972, placing it eight years before the 1980 film instead of 14 years.
So why the change? Setting the story in the 1970s allows the show to take place in a specific and well-documented cultural moment rather than the film’s vague postwar past. It also helps establish the show’s themes around the era’s growing distrust of institutions.
