An original cast member is slated to return in the upcoming season 18 of Criminal Minds (aka Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3).
While most of the cast from the show's original run was kept when it was revived in Paramount+, there are a couple of actors who were notably missing and fans have been wondering whether they will return.
An Original Cast Member Will Return in Criminal Minds Season 18
Reports have confirmed that original cast member Matthew Gray Gubler will be reprising the role of Spencer Reid in Criminal Minds season 18.
He is only set to appear in one episode of the upcoming season, which recently wrapped its production.
There are no details yet on how Spencer Reid will return in the story of the upcoming season, but since the revival started, it's been frequently mentioned that the character has been out on a "special assignment."
While he is only set to appear in one episode, it is still exciting news for fans who have been clamoring for his comeback and it is curious to see how it all plays out considering the number of years that he's been missing.
Is Matthew Gray Gubler's Return in Criminal Minds Permanent?
Unfortunately, Gubler's return to Criminal Minds will not be permanent as his comeback is only set as a one-off for now.
He is currently attached to star in the CBS pilot Einstein where he will play the great grandson of Albert Einstein.
His new project is described as a procedural where he was a "comfortably tenured professor until his bad-boy antics land him in trouble with the law and he is pressed into service helping a local police detective solve her most puzzling cases."
If the pilot ended up being successful and led to a series order, it will be more unlikely that Grubler will return to the series anytime soon after his one-off comeback unless his schedule permits him to do so.
At the very least, fans have his one-off return to celebrate and they can hope for now it will lead to more appearances at some point.
