After years of waiting, it seems there’s still hope for Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 to be made, as The Batman writer Mattson Tomlin has given a promising update about Tobey Maguire’s possible return as Peter Parker.
For starters, Tomlin is reportedly working on a story that follows the web-crawler as a husband and father, with Maguire in the lead.
So, will fans finally get to see the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man as a family man?
Will there be Spider-Man 4?
After fans saw Maguire reprise his role as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home alongside fellow Spidey actors Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland, hopes have been high for his return in Spider-Man 4.
Sure, there have been plenty of rumors here and there, but nothing has come to fruition yet.
Recently, Tomlin responded to a fan on X who asked if there was “any movement on the Spider-Man 4 front.”
“Slow and steady wins the race,” he said. “There won’t be anything to say about that for a long time (if ever!) because it involves a lot of people and politics and things going right that have nothing to do with me, but I haven’t gotten a ‘no’ yet.”
Back in July, Tomlin shared his vision for Spider-Man if he were ever asked to write the screenplay.
“Honestly right now my main interest in this respect would be to write a Spider-Man 4 where Tobey’s Spider-Man is jugging being a husband and a father,” he responded. “Spider-Man as a father is where I gravitate towards given the last 8 films.”
From there, fans began suggesting that he should develop a Superman and Lois-type story featuring Spider-Man’s daughter, May “Mayday” Parker, alongside Mary Jane Parker.
If this happens, many see it as the perfect conclusion to the story of the man many call the “best” Peter Parker—Maguire.
However, while fans are already excited about the idea, Sony has yet to break its silence on the matter.
Will Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire Return in Spider-Man 4?
Raimi and Maguire’s take on Spider-Man wasn’t just a massive commercial success—it was also a critical hit, with Maguire earning widespread praise for his performance, particularly in Spider-Man 2.
A fourth film was originally planned and even slated for release in May 2011, but it was ultimately canceled due to creative differences behind the scenes.
Instead of continuing their story, Sony decided to reboot the franchise with Marc Webb as director and Andrew Garfield taking over as the new Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man.
Despite that, Raimi remains open to returning to the Spider-Man universe, especially after the success of Maguire’s appearance in No Way Home.
“I didn’t think it was possible but after jumping back in with the multiverse, I realized just like Doctor Strange does, anything is possible now,” he told Moviepilot in April 2022. “So I’m completely open to it.”
Maguire, on the other hand, is also eager to return for Spider-Man 4.
“I love these films and I love all of the different series,” he said in the book Spider-Man No Way Home: The Official Movie Special. “If these guys called me and said, ‘Would you show up tonight to hang out and goof around?’ or ‘Would you show up to do this movie or read a scene or do a Spider-Man thing?’, it would be a ‘yes!’ Because why wouldn’t I want to do that?”
With Tomlin, Raimi, and Maguire all ready to make Spider-Man 4, all that’s left is for Sony to give the green light.
