  • Primary Subject: Mads Mikkelsen's conditional return for a Hannibal revival
  • Key Update: Mads Mikkelsen confirmed at Emerald City Comic Con that he and Hugh Dancy are eager to return for a Hannibal revival, but only on the condition.
  • Status: Confirmed

  • Quick Answer: Mads Mikkelsen is fully willing to reprise his role as Hannibal Lecter provided the project skips ahead several years rather than trying to deliver an immediate, definitive ending.

It has been over a decade since NBC abruptly served the final course of Bryan Fuller's Hannibal, leaving fannibals completely starved after the show's infamous cliffhanger.

Ever since Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) and Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) took their dramatic, romantic plunge off a cliffside in the 2015 finale, is there hope for a Hannibal season 4 or one last movie, after all?

As much as fans are led to believe that Hannibal's ending has closed the curtains on the show, a continuation can still happen, given the possibilities of TV nowadays.

In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Mikkelsen gave his one condition to reprise his most iconic role on TV, while also adding that he and the showrunner, Bryan Fuller, agreed that Hannibal is more suited for TV: "Yeah, I think that the Hannibal that he created is a TV animal."

Mikkelsen laid out his condition: "He can persuade me to make a film, sure, but it's only an hour and a half, and I think that his way of writing and his way of developing characters and stories are much more suitable for 13 or 14 episodes."

The Casino Royale star continued, saying that as much as he would like to return, the comeback would have to make sense. In this case, a timeskip story would do the job.

"I don't think there's anyone who wouldn't want to go back and do it, but I also think that time is tick-tocking away. It's been 10 years now, maybe even more. We stay as young as we can, but all of a sudden, we're just too old, right?" Mikkelsen said, "So it's going to [have to] be one of these years soon, and I think everybody would enjoy it."

Is a Hannibal Season 4 or Movie Possible in the Future?

Mikkelsen has a point: TV shows that are meant to be spread across episodes would most likely not perform well on the big screens, limited to an hour or so. This includes Hannibal and its dark aestheticism when it comes to storytelling.

But if the desire from the cast is there, then what's the hold up? The show was cancelled due to low ratings and messy rights issues, since Thomas Harris' literary license had been split between multiple entities for decades.

Not to mention, the showrunner is seemingly more interested in adapting The Silence of the Lambs, which was previously made into a movie with Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal. This time, with a dream casting of Zendaya as Clarice Starling, who was Jodie Foster in the original adaptation.

It remains to be seen whether Hannibal could really return for a fourth season, let alone a movie premiere, unless it were to expand the universe, somehow.

In the meantime, fans can stream all seasons of Hannibal on Prime Video through an AMC+ add-on subscription. Stay tuned!
