- Quick Answer: James Gunn confirmed that Clayface will return in future DCU projects following his solo movie, leaving the door open for sequels and further franchise appearances.
Amid speculation about Clayface’s larger role in the DC Universe, DC Studios co-head James Gunn has finally confirmed that the titular character’s movie is just the beginning of his future appearances in the franchise.
The upcoming psychological horror thriller has established its own version of Gotham City without featuring Batman or connecting directly to any other DCU film or TV series. So, how could Clayface appear in other DCU projects?
Where Will Clayface Next Appear in the DC Universe?

Clayface tells the origin story of the titular character, exploring Matt Hagen’s (Tom Rhys Harries) life before his tragic transformation into the iconic DC villain.
But since he seemingly meets his demise in the animated series Creature Commandos, will this be the last time fans see him in the DCU?
“This [movie] isn’t the last we’ll see of Clayface,” James Gunn told Cinemex. “And I can’t wait for you guys to see what we do with him.”
While the DC Studios co-head did not reveal where Clayface would appear next, he confirmed the character would return in future DCU projects.
It is also possible that the movie is not a one-and-done standalone, leaving the door open for a potential sequel.
For now, fans will have to wait and see how Clayface’s story will continue in the DCU.
Did Clayface Really Die in Creature Commandos?

Now that Clayface is set to return to the DCU, questions have emerged about whether he really died in Creature Commandos Season 1.
The villain pretended to be a major ally before ambushing Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo) and Eric Frankenstein (David Harbour).
However, he was then electrocuted with enough voltage to light up a city block, making him appear to be dead.
So, does this mean he is out of the franchise? Although Clayface is a prequel to Creature Commandos, the DC Comics source material offers a possible explanation for how the shapeshifting villain could survive such an attack and fake his death by shaping part of his clay body into a “corpse.”
A smaller portion of his body could escape and later rebuild itself. That said, there are theories that Clayface may return in Creature Commandos Season 2 and could even be recruited into “Task Force M.”
If this happens, it could help establish Clayface’s character in the DCU before the much-anticipated Batman reboot, The Brave and the Bold.
This could also be an early hint of what James Gunn has planned for the character’s future in the DCU.
Clayface is set to hit theaters on October 23, while Creature Commandos Season 2 is expected to arrive on Max in 2027.
