Adam Sandler recently revealed that the script for Happy Gilmore 2 faced a massive change following the passing of Carl Weathers last year.

The highly anticipated sequel to the beloved '90s sports comedy is set to arrive on Netflix later this month, with Sandler and the other cast members from the original reprising their roles. However, Weathers is one of the few who were unable to participate, as he passed away months before production started.

How Did Carl Weathers' Death Affect the Script for Happy Gilmore 2?

In an interview with Collider, Sandler revealed that Weathers originally had a "massive part" in Happy Gilmore 2. However, after his passing, they had to make some massive changes to the script.

"We had a painful change. Carl Weathers had a massive part. I would talk to Carl, and we were excited, and then Carl passed away," he shared.

"We had to rewrite a lot of the stuff, and even what the story was. We made numerous positive references to how great Chubbs was in the movie. That was the biggest change."

While Weather's character, Chubbs Peterson, died in the first film, he was still intended to appear in the sequel as a spiritual advisor to Happy, who visits him in a dream.

He added, "In the first version that we came up with, he had a son. He was coming back to me a lot in my dreams, and he had a son who was mad at Happy for causing the death of daddy."

Despite Chubbs' absence, director Kyle Newacheck has assured fans that they will still honor the spirit of Chubbs in the sequel, and he will not be forgotten.

"You can’t make Happy Gilmore without Chubbs Peterson. It doesn’t exist. You can be assured his spirit is throughout the film. He may not be by Happy’s side anymore, but he’s on his shoulder," he said.

What to Expect in Happy Gilmore 2?

It’s been almost 30 years since we last saw Happy Gilmore, the long-driving hero who won the Tour Championship in 1996 and became a legend in the world of golf.

In the sequel, fans will see Happy Gilmore attempting to make a comeback in the world of golf in order to make his daughter's dream of enrolling in ballet school come true.

Sandler, Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald, and Ben Stiller are reprising their roles from the original. They are joined by Bad Bunny, Margaret Qualley, Travis Kelce, Sadie and Sunny Sandler, Benny Safdie, and Marcello Hernandez. Several professional golfers are expected to make cameo appearances.

The film is set to release on Netflix worldwide on July 25.
