When Carol Danvers went from being Ms. Marvel to Captain Marvel, her star rose in a huge way. This led to her getting an ongoing series, which would get relaunched a number of times, a movie, and one of the best costumes ever seen. There's a reason why it looks great in a comic book and live-action since it's arguably one of the all-time greats when it comes to giving a character something new to wear.
Before Jamie McKelvie gave us one of the best modern comic book costumes, Dexter Soy also came up with some designs for the character. Unlike McKelvie, who was working on Young Avengers at the time with frequent collaborator Kieron Gillen, Soy was the regular artist for Captain Marvel. His designs for the character were interesting, paying tribute to her time as Warbird and original Ms. Marvel costume, but we can't blame Marvel for taking McKelvie's design.
These designs aren't bad at all and it's kind of a shame that Minn-Erva didn't adopt the red look here since it would have looked great. Danvers would have looked good in it as well and Marvel could always have her wear one of these designs as extra armor for a specific mission or threat but none of them compare with the design McKelvie came up with.
As someone who got into comic books around the Marvel NOW era, it's cool seeing this costume go from fan-favorite to default movie costume. It's a shame that Captain Marvel won't keep Carol's arc from the comics since she was somebody who accepted being a c-list hero and decided to be more than that sometime after Avengers vs X-Men.
Captain Marvel comes out on March 08, 2019.
