Mike Myers recently defended his public support of his home country of Canada during his recent Saturday Night Live appearances.
The veteran former cast member notably impersonated Elon Musk for a few episodes during the current season of the hit NBC variety series. He has also protested the Trump administration's attacks against his home country by wearing the shirt "Canada is Not for Sale."
Mike Myers Explains Political Protest Defending Canada
In a recent interview with The New York Times, Myers explained his decision to defend Canada during his Saturday Night Live appearances this season.
While he originally did not plan to do such a political protest in the show, he got "angrier and angrier" during the night.
"What happened came from my ankles and from my brain and from my heart, and it was not about me — it was about my country. I wanted to send a message home to say that I’m with you, you know," Myers said.
The comedian also went on to tell the outlet about "no one is more Canadian than a person who no longer lives in Canada. We love America. We love you guys. We don’t understand what this madness is."
Regarding Musk's involvement in the Trump government, Myers said that the tech billionaire "goes against how I feel as a Canadian… [and] belief in good government."
He added, "Fascism doesn’t like to be ridiculed; it likes to be feared. Satire is an important tool in the toolbox to say that this is not normal — that the cuts he’s making are not normal."
Mike Myers' Appearance in Canada's Liberal Party Ad
After his political protest on Saturday Night Live, Myers participated in an advertisement for Canada's Liberal Party.
"I wanted it to be like, ‘I know I don’t live there anymore, and let’s talk about that. I thought it would be funny if the prime minister of Canada ran an identity test on me," he said of his approach.
Regarding Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Myers said, "I think he’s very reasonable. He’s taken a calm, resolute, articulate stance in defense of our sovereignty."
While it is unknown yet whether Myers will appear in either of the last three episodes of Saturday Night Live season 50, one thing is for sure is that his political activism will not stop anytime soon.
