A British family recently spoke out about their ordeal after their son was denied a passport for sharing the name with a Star Wars character.
Christian Mowbray, a soldier who is serving The Corps of Royal Engineers, and his wife and former soldier Becky have a son together named Loki Skywalker Mowbray. He was born on May the 4th Star Wars Day in 2017.
For years, there was no problem for the Mowbray couple, who named their son after the famous family in the Star Wars franchise. Unfortunately, it became an ordeal for them as they were planning their vacation.
Boy Named After Star Wars Character Denied Passport; Family Asked to Get Disney's Permission
In preparation for their vacation in the Dominican Republic that was supposed to take place this October, Christian and Becky applied for a passport for their son Loki.
However, they were denied by the Home Office which told them that they couldn't print the name "Skywalker" on the passport due to copyright issues.
The family was not aware of the potential issue before applying for the passport. They were planning to ask for permission from Disney to settle the problem.
"We were not aware that this could be a potential issue. We understand that Loki's middle name is copyrighted, but we have no intention of using it for personal gain," Christian said in an interview.
"I understand their position and reasoning, but I believe they need to recognize that modern names are evolving. I can understand if an adult changes their name for a ‘stunt’, but this is not the case for a child from birth."
The patriarch added that the ordeal has caused "significant stress" for the entire family and they would be saddened if it would come to a point where they have to legally change their son's name.
Fortunately, the problem has been resolved as they have received a confirmation from the Home Office that the application has finally been approved and a passport will be issued for Loki.
In other words, the Force was strong with the Mowbray family and they can now happily take their well-deserved vacation soon.
