Michelle Williams recently opened up about her experience working on Blue Valentine and living together with Ryan Gosling during filming.
The actress earned an Oscar nomination for starring in the acclaimed romantic drama film. However, despite the praises she received for her performance, it looks like her experience working on the project did not go smoothly.
Michelle Williams Recalls Living with Ryan Gosling During Blue Valentine Filming
In an interview with Dax Shepard on the Armchair Expert podcast, Michelle Williams shared that she and Ryan Gosling lived together during the filming of Blue Valentine.
They decided to live under the same roof to immerse themselves as they were about to film scenes where their characters are married.
"We took a break in filming. We shot the first part when they’re young and in love and everything’s going really well. And then we took a two-week break, and we lived together," Williams revealed.
"We did these improvisations during the day, honestly, to figure out ways to annoy each other and to destroy this thing that we had made."
Williams clarified that it was an entirely "professional situation," and she compared it to like "office hours."
"We were having such a hard time letting go of the thing that we loved. [Director] Derek [Cianfrance] was like, ‘We gotta mess this up, and we need to burn it down.’ And we did a ceremonial [burn of] our wedding photo," she added.
The actress described the experience as "horrible," and she doesn't know "if anybody could work like that again."
Williams said, "You’ve got a crew that’s on hold. You’re paying people, I mean, it’s such a small movie, so, so low budget and a small crew, but you’re taking a big down period in the middle of the thing."
Michelle Williams Makes Rare Comment About Heath Ledger
In the same interview, Williams made a rare comment about the late Heath Ledger, with whom she shares a child and was her partner before his death in early 2008.
"I don't know that I've ever fallen in love with somebody so quickly. This is one of the most special boys I've ever met, and I can feel the weight of the world on him in a very special way that kind of broke my heart. I was very, very sad, and I thought he was just so special," Shepard said to the actress.
Williams replied, "So special, so special, thank god there's [our child] Matilda."
Shepard compared Ledger to "[a] heart here that's just leaking out everywhere."
The actress agreed to the host's sentiment and added, "[He has] an incredible sensitivity."
