It's still unclear if we'll ever get another Blade Runner film after Denis Villeneuve's sequel didn't do too well in the box office. However, fans can rest assured that the future is set in a new format. It has just been confirmed that a live-action Blade Runner series is in the works and original director Ridley Scott will be involved in the project!
According to Deadline, Amazon Prime has called on Ridley Scott to serve as the executive producer of the new live-action series. The upcoming show will be titled Blade Runner 2099 and will take place a full 50 years after the events in Blade Runner 2049.
There are not a lot of details about the show's storyline but the report confirms that Silka Luisa will co-produce and serve as lead writer of the Blade Runner series. Amazon Studios is also looking to establish a writers room that will join Luisa soon.
But is it possible that Ridley Scott will serve as more than just executive producer? It is noted that the filmmaker could return to direct Blade Runner 2099. However, this would depend on whether Amazon decides to move forward with the series.
Scott helmed the 1982 film which was based on Philip K. Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and the movie has since spawned a live-action sequel as well as numerous animated features, publications and video games. The latest offering from the franchise is the anime series Blade Runner: Black Lotus, which starred The Matrix Resurrections actress Jessica Henwick.
For now, Blade Runner 2099 is still in the early stages and has not yet confirmed a cast. However, there is little doubt we will be getting more news about the show in the next few months. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.
