Bill Maher has weighed in on Larry David's satirical essay that poked fun at his controversial meeting with Donald Trump.

The Real Time host has been getting flak for visiting the US president at the White House and the glowing review that he gave afterwards. It led to David penning an essay that spoofed his meeting titled "My Dinner with Adolf."

In an interview with Piers Morgan, Maher shared his reaction to the satirical essay that David penned about his meeting with Trump.

"First of all, it’s kind of insulting to six million dead Jews. It’s an argument you kind of lost just to start it," he said.

"Look, maybe it’s not completely logically fair, but Hitler has really kind of got to stay in his own place. He is the GOAT of evil. We’re just going to have to leave it like that."

Maher believed that David lost his argument when he pulled the Hitler card on the criticism of his Trump meeting.

"This wasn’t my favorite moment of our friendship. I think the minute you play the ‘Hitler’ card, you’ve lost the argument. Come on, man. Hitler, Nazis — nobody has been harder, and more prescient I must say, about Donald Trump than me," he said.

"I don’t need to be lectured on who Donald Trump is. Just the fact that I met him in person didn’t change that. The fact that I reported honestly is not a sin either."

Despite that, Maher is hoping that he can still be friends with David and they can settle their differences.

"I don’t want to make this constantly personal with me and Larry. We might be friends again. I can take a shot, and I can also take it when people disagree with me. That’s not exactly the way I would’ve done it," he added.

"Again, the irony: let’s go back to what my original thing was. There’s got to be a better way than hurling insults and not talking to people. If I can talk to Trump, I can talk to Larry David too."

Larry David's 'My Dinner with Adolf' Essay

David penned a satirical essay for The New York Times titled "My Dinner With Adolf" that poked fun at Maher's recent meeting with Trump at the White House.

The essay was written as a fictitious and satirical first-person account of David meeting with Adolf Hitler.

"I had been a vocal critic of his on the radio from the beginning, pretty much predicting everything he was going to do on the road to dictatorship. No one I knew encouraged me to go. 'He's Hitler. He’s a monster,'" he wrote.

"But eventually I concluded that hate gets us nowhere. I knew I couldn’t change his views, but we need to talk to the other side."

David jokingly wrote about how he started relating to Hitler during the dinner and saw a different side of the dictator by the end of the night.

"Two hours later, the dinner was over, and the Führer escorted me to the door. 'I am so glad to have met you. I hope I’m no longer the monster you thought I was,'" he continued.

"'I must say, mein Führer, I'm so thankful I came. Although we disagree on many issues, it doesn't mean that we have to hate each other.' And with that, I gave him a Nazi salute and walked out into the night."
