There will be major changes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2028, as it is reportedly set to focus on two main superhero teams.

The MCU is expected to undergo a soft reboot following Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027. However, according to industry insider Alex Perez, the franchise will still feel familiar despite several key changes.

Previously, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed that Avengers: Secret Wars would serve as a soft reboot for the MCU, creating what he described as a “singular timeline.”

While he admitted that the word “reboot” can feel scary, as it may mean many different things, industry insider Alex Perez revealed what could change.

In an interview with Cosmic Circus, Perez claimed that the MCU reboot would be “the same as before,” except for the increased prominence of two major superhero teams.

“Mutants will be more prominent, and the Fantastic Four will be living among Earth-616,” he said.

If this is true, Marvel will finally have a proper foothold for the X-Men in the MCU’s main continuity after years of buildup. The much-loved mutants will finally have the spotlight they deserve.

As for the Fantastic Four, they are already expected to join the mainline Earth-616 continuity in Avengers: Doomsday after being introduced in the alternate reality of Earth-828 in Fantastic Four: First Steps.

So, is there still a chance for them to return to their original home after Secret Wars? According to Perez, it’s highly unlikely.

Marvel Studios has been gradually introducing mutants into its roster since the 2019 Disney-Fox merger, beginning with Patrick Stewart’s Professor X cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

As a major X-Men reunion is set to take place in Avengers: Doomsday, which other OG actor will be appearing?

So far, Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Kelsey Grammer, Alan Cumming, and Channing Tatum are confirmed to reprise their roles as Professor X, Magneto, Cyclops, Beast, Nightcrawler, and Gambit, respectively.

Rebecca Romijn is also set to join the fold as the shape-shifting mutant Raven Darkhölme, aka Mystique.

The actress first played the role in 2000’s X-Men, with her last appearance being an uncredited cameo in 2011’s X-Men: First Class. Since then, Jennifer Lawrence has taken over the role in the prequel timeline.

Marvel confirmed Romijn’s involvement in the film during its five-hour livestream cast announcement in March 2025. Fans later got their first look at her return in the CinemaCon 2026 trailer, which shows her transforming from Mystique into Yelena Belova mid-fight against Florence Pugh’s character.

The scene is reportedly part of the X-Men’s clash with the Avengers, which also features Gambit battling Shang-Chi.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027.
