Benedict Cumberbatch Talks About Doctor Strange Taking Over Tony Stark's Mentorship Role

We already know that Peter Parker is getting a new mentor in Spider-Man: No Way Home. But just how different is Doctor Strange compared to Tony Stark? Benedict Cumberbatch has spoken about his character's new role in the highly anticipated Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel. Not surprisingly, the Avengers: Endgame star admitted that the Sorceror Supreme has a different take on how to deal with the teenaged superhero.

Cumberbatch's casting in No Way Home was exciting news for fans since Doctor Strange is so different from Tony Stark in so many ways. However, people agreed that Stephen Strange might be the best Avenger to serve as Peter's mentor after Tony's passing.

But how differently will Doctor Strange guide Peter in Spider-Man 3? Cumberbatch told Empire that it could be similar but also distinct in certain ways.

"There's a shade of the [Tony] Stark relationship... It's not as intimate to begin with," he said. "Because of how experienced a superhero he is, it's a strange dynamic and it kind of shifts into something far more parental and corrective. And then it shifts again."

The trailer already showed us that the sorcerer is ready to help the webslinger with a particular problem. However, it may have made matters worse for the rest of the universe. Let's just hope that they could fix everything before it gets even more severe in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

A strong mentor is pretty important for Peter now that we know there will be villains from other universes who will be going after Spider-Man. We've already seen Alfred Molina's return as Doc Ock in the No Way Home trailer, which also teased on the other baddies who will show up in the film. Will Doctor Strange manage to help Peter? We'll find out when Spider-Man 3 hits theaters this December.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is directed by Jon Watts and stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jon Favreau, Jacob Batalon, Tony Revolori, Marisa Tomei, J. B. Smoove, Benedict Wong, and Jamie Foxx. The film will premiere exclusively in theaters on December 17, 2021.
