Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman humorously discussed the secret to a lasting marriage ahead of the release of their upcoming marriage-comedy film The Roses.

Cumberbatch has been married to actress and playwright Sophie Hunter since 2015, while Colman tied the knot with Hollywood producer Ed Sinclair in 2001.

Both having only ever married once and for many years, they revealed how their respective unions have continued to thrive.

In an interview with The Guardian, both Cumberbatch and Colman revealed their stands on love that goes beyond the wedding and exchanging of vows.

“I love love,” Colman said. “I like to romanticize love. I think it's ace.”

Cumberbatch, on the other hand, revealed “classicism” gives people the idea how romantic love can be, which he finds “impossible to live up to.”

“Those two things wrestle: it's great to fall in love, but eventually one of you will be dog-tired and doing the bins,” he explained.

The Doctor Strange star continued that marriage is not just a wedding and the “idealism of vows.”

“It's such a powerful thing to express love and then have it reflected back with your friends and family,” he continued. “But to find something beyond that heightened moment, you have to think a bit more deeply than just the party of love.”

But however they find love is, the two actors confirmed they’re still both in love despite being into their respective marriages for decades.

“I’m quite in love,” Colman revealed, to which Cumberbatch added, “I am too! It's all great. It's, y'know, life. And I know Ed annoys you sometimes.”

What is Benedict Cumberbatch & Olivia Colman’s The Roses About?

After working together in the 2021 romantic comedy The Electrical Life of Louis Wain, Cumberbatch and Colman reunite in The Roses.

A film adaptation of Warren Adler’s 1981 novel The War of the Roses, the story was first brought to the big screen in 1989 with Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner, and Danny DeVito in the lead roles.

“It takes nothing away from the original film,” Colman told Newsweek. “Ours is with a sort of respectful nod to it and has taken it in a slightly different direction.”

This new iteration follows Ivy (Colman) and Theo (Cumberbatch), a clever couple whose marriage is built on witty banter—so much so that it has become part of their personalities.

But after moving from Britain to the U.S., their professional lives take drastically different turns: Theo’s career begins to fail while Ivy’s soars to incredible success.

What starts as lighthearted sparring soon escalates into a domestic war, with their once-playful jabs transforming into sharp weapons wielded even at dinner parties and beyond.

The Roses is set to hit theaters on August 29.
