The concept of Star Trek is something that almost everyone is familiar with, and we've been getting several parodies like The Orville and Galaxy Quest. What's interesting is, HBO is looking to push the ‘spaceships as ships' comparison even further, and gives us a show centered on an intergalactic luxury ship called Avenue 5.
Here's the short description:
Space captain Ryan Clark of the Avenue 5 tries to get along with others in the space tourism industry.
Front and center we have Hugh Laurie cast as the captain Ryan Clark who is trying to keep the ship together despite all the hijinks that we should expect. Other stars include Josh Gad (Frozen) who is the ship's wealthy benefactor Herman Judd; plus we have other appearances from Suzy Nakamura, Rebecca Front, Zach Woods, and Nikki Amuka-Bird.
What's also interesting is that the show was created by Armando Iannucci, who is probably best known for his political comedies like Veep and In the Loop. He was also the director behind the hilarious Death of Stalin from 2017. It would be interesting to see what he would bring into a sci-fi comedy like Avenue 5.
With Silicon Valley just ending, I'm waiting for the next big comedy to hit HBO. While I do like Barry, I'm excited to see Iannucci's take on comedy in space.
Avenue 5 is set to hit HBO Jan. 19, 2020.
