A lot of scenes in Avengers: Endgame were left in the cutting room floor to keep the three-hour runtime. One of these scenes is a funny but revealing moment between Thor and Valkyrie.
Fans will remember that the God of Thunder decided to join the Guardians in space by the end of the film, designating Valkyrie as the new ruler of Asgard. It was a genuinely heartfelt moment between the two that Thor apparently found a way to ruin. In the deleted scene, Valkyrie responded by putting her arm around him, which he misinterprets.
Avengers: Endgame co-director Anthony Russo explains to SiriusXM:
There's a funny beat. If you remember at the end of the film where Thor is saying goodbye to Valkyrie, and he's basically turning Asgard over to her. In the endings we felt like we wanted to keep it a little tight, so we were looking for some stuff to squeeze there. He had this beat with Valkryie where after he sort of turns over the kingdom to her, she puts her arm on his shoulder and he sort of starts to lean in for a kiss. And she goes, 'What are you doing?' And he goes, 'Oh I thought the touch..' She's like, 'Yeah, it's a goodbye touch. A tap I'm giving you.' It was a really funny beat but we cut it.
Although what we got is already amazing, it would have been great to see this pan out in the film. From the sound of it, this is another showcase of Chris Hemsworth excellent comedic timing. Hopefully, Marvel Studios will throw it in the Avengers: Endgame home video release.
A Thor and Valkyrie romance was hinted at in Thor: Ragnarok, but after everything that's happened, it was set aside. This deleted scene, although played for laughs, hints that Thor did at least felt a connection with her.
Unfortunately, it is looking more and more unlikely that this will no longer be explored since the two are far away from each other now doing their own thing. On the bright side, Thor will be hanging out with Star-Lord and crew, which is also something that has fans totally excited too.
