A legacy sequel to the 1982 classic Conan the Barbarian is officially in the works, with Arnold Schwarzenegger set to reprise his iconic role. Here's what to expect in his return.
For the past several years, there have been attempts to do a new sequel to Conan the Barbarian, the '80s classic that turned Schwarzenegger into a global movie star. While a reboot starring Jason Momoa was released in 2011, fans were still hoping that the A-list star would reprise his iconic role in a new sequel after all these years.
What to Expect in Conan the Barbarian Legacy Sequel
Reports have confirmed that 20th Century Studios is officially working on a legacy sequel to Conan the Barbarian titled King Conan, which will relaunch the franchise.
Mission: Impossible's Christopher McQuarrie is attached to write and direct the film. As mentioned, Schwarzenegger is confirmed to reprise his iconic role.
So far, the plot details regarding the legacy sequel are still under wraps, except that it would take place decades after the events of the original. It remains unknown whether Conan the Destroyer will be considered canon.
Addressing the crowd at the Arnold Sports Festival last weekend in Ohio, Schwarzenegger teased what fans should expect in the legacy sequel.
"It’s a great story where Conan was 40 years king [as] king and he gets complacent, and now he gets forced out of the kingdom, slowly. Then there’s conflict, of course, and then he somehow comes back, and then there’s all kinds of madness and violence and magic and creatures," he said.
"Now, of course, you have all the special effects, and the studio system has plenty of money to make those movies really big. So I’m looking forward to all of those projects."
So far, no release window or production date has been set for the project, since it is still in the development phase.
What Are Arnold Schwarzenegger's Upcoming Other Projects?

Schwarzenegger also confirmed that he is in talks to star in the next Predator movie and a potential sequel to another '80s classic, Commando.
So far, he has not committed to both projects, but there have been conversations about starring in them.
"They did an additional Predator, and the director [Dan Trachtenberg] has been doing a great job of that. Now, he wants me to be in the next Predator. We’ve talked about it," the A-list star said.
"As a matter of fact, Fox Studios has kind of rediscovered Arnold. They’ve come to me and said, ‘We want you to do Predator, we just got a script for you to do Commando 2.’"
For now, stay tuned for news and updates on whether Schwarzenegger will end up signing on to do both projects.
