The Met Gala's a once-in-a-year opportunity for A-listers to flaunt their stuff on the red carpet, but 2025 dropped a shocking revelation: Emmy-winning actress Anna Sawai accidentally matched with fashion icon Zendaya.
See, this year's Met Gala theme is "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style", otherwise known as "Tailored for You", in which guests get to interpret menswear and suiting accustomed to their own style.
Well, who would've thought two stars would end up matching on the red carpet?
Met Gala Twinsie? Shōgun Star's Perfect Response to Accidental Wardrobe Match
The Shōgun star Anna Sawai graced the Met Gala's carpet for the first time wearing Dior's white suit with a wide-brimmed hat, a nearly identical style worn by Zendaya, except hers was a tailored Louis Vuitton suit. Take a look at their matching outfits side-by-side in the tweet below:
For as long as fans can remember, Zendaya's proven to be Met Gala royalty since she made her debut in 2015, which fans pointed out, "I don't think that's ever happened to Zendaya before, how awkward," one fan wrote on X.
Another showed more sympathy for Anna, considering this was her debut, "I'm more so embarrassed on behalf of the other girl, her style is usually on point and this would've been a MOMENT if it wasn't ZENDAYA of all people who she was matching with."
Fret not, though. As clueless as both stars were, Anna Sawai seemed to remain in good spirits, backed up by her stylist Karla Welch, who took the opportunity to honor Zendaya, too, on their Instagram story.
"We can add homage to Zendaya as well," Karla wrote, "Celebrating the spirit of Black dandyism and Zendaya hehe." You can check out the posted story below:
"I feel like every carpet, I've only worn dresses," Anna said in The New York Times, prior to her appearance at the Met Gala, "This is going to be the first time that I'm getting to kind of channel my androgynous side, and I'm really excited to pay respect to Black dandyism."
Neither has spoken about the accidental matching yet.
Anna Sawai's Upcoming Projects: Will She Return in Shōgun Season 2?
Awkward night aside, fans are hoping to see Anna reprise her role as Toda Mariko in the developing Shōgun season 2. This, however, only comes in the form of speculations since her character already died in the season 1 finale.
Besides, even Anna believes that Mariko's role on the show is already finished, too: "I don't want her to write something just to have her in it, like it feels a little forced." But she didn't brush off the possibility that the second season could still need her voice or cameos for flashback scenes.
In the meantime, fans can expect to see Anna Sawai in her upcoming projects.
She'll be included in David Leitch's (Bullet Train, Deadpool 2) upcoming Amazon MGM Studios heist film, How to Rob a Bank, alongside co-stars Nicholas Hoult and Pete Davidson.
As for recent projects, Anna's finished filming for Apple TV+'s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which wrapped production for season 2, and is currently in production on (Saint) Peter, a coming-of-age dramedy executive produced by Peter Farrelly (The Three Stooges, Ricky Stanicky).
