GKIDS continues to bring more classic anime to the big screen. Aside from its recent Studio Ghibli Fest, GKIDS announced that it will bring the Angel’s Egg 4K remaster to North American cinemas.
This anime film was released back in December 1985, though it has not gotten a major release in North America. That’s not too surprising given that Angel’s Egg is more of an art film that may not appeal to mainstream audiences.
GKIDS Is Bringing Mamoru Oshii’s Angel’s Egg Remaster to North America
Angel’s Egg is directed by Mamoru Oshii, one of the most acclaimed anime directors of all time. Oshii is best known for directing the 1995 Ghost in the Shell movie, along with Patlabor 2: The Movie and the original Urusei Yatsura.
The film was also made in collaboration with Yoshitaka Amano, the iconic artist of Final Fantasy. Amano is the illustrator of the franchise’s title logos for mainline entries.
Its story follows a young girl in an underwater city who is taking care of a large egg. Soon, a boy comes along and suggests they break the egg.
Even though it’s not exactly a story-driven work, the fact that Angel’s Egg is a collaboration between two notable artists should make it a must-see for many anime fans.
GKIDS is bringing the movie to North American cinemas in 2025 as part of the film’s 40th anniversary celebration.
The 4K remaster version is also the one to be screened in cinemas. This version is being supervised by Oshii himself.

Angel’s Egg 4K Remaster Theatrical Release Date Predictions
Currently, there’s no word yet on a specific release date for the movie in North American cinemas, though the film’s original premiere date may hold the clue.
As the film was originally released in Japan on December 15, 1985, the 4K remaster’s release may be in late 2025 to coincide with the actual anniversary date.
Of course, that’s not to say that it will be released exactly on December 15, though that’s certainly a possibility.

Angel’s Egg Is Also Coming to Home Video
It’s also not clear if it will get a wide release or if the theatrical run will be limited. For those who won’t be able to watch it, the good news is that GKIDS will also release the Angel’s Egg 4K remaster on home video.
That should mean a Blu-ray release will happen at some point in North America, though a streaming release isn’t confirmed yet.
