It's official! Amy Pascal has confirmed in an interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that the animated Venom movie is in the works!
Sony Pictures Animation selected filmmaking duo Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, the team behind Final Destination: Bloodlines, to direct the animated feature.
Fresh off directing the horror hit, Lipovsky and Stein will make their animated feature debut as they transition from live-action storytelling to Marvel's cosmic anti-hero universe.
To guide the production, longtime Marvel and Venom producers Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach are returning to oversee the symbiote's shift to feature animation.
Fans will be glad to know that franchise star Tom Hardy is also attached to the project, but in an undisclosed role. It is currently unconfirmed whether he will voice the character or simply step into a behind-the-scenes role as a producer.
The animated Venom project is currently in its earliest stages of development. Sony Pictures Animation has not yet locked in a lead screenwriter, but the studio is in the process of assembling a dedicated writers' room to craft the story and build out the film's overarching plot.
Given the extended development timeline required for feature animation, a release date has yet to be confirmed.
Why an Animated Standalone Venom Film May Be the Best Move for the Symbiote's Franchise
While the live-action films landed strong at the box office, rendering the fluid nature of symbiotes requires a heavy CGI budget, which may work better in the world of animation, as it allows animators to fully lean into the chaotic morphing and stylized violence of the comics, much like the visual innovation seen in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
The live-action films briefly teased the larger Marvel lore, which included Knull the Symbiote God, but an animated medium offers a far more flexible platform to adapt the sprawling cosmic storylines like King in Black or Planet of the Symbiotes without limiting the story to a realistic human environment.
It's also worth mentioning that one of the largest criticisms of the live-action Venom trilogy was its missing crossover with Spider-Man.
Translating Venom to Sony's animated footprint gives the studio a clean slate to either integrate a version of Peter Parker/Miles Morales (or a Spider-Verse, wink wink) to build a distinct universe tailored specifically around the anti-hero.
