Michael Fassbender is set to star in a new Netflix drama series that will tackle the legendary story of the Kennedy family.

Following the end of The Crown, Netflix fans have been wondering whether the streamer will do another historical drama series that tackles a well-known royal family or family dynasty from other parts of the world. Now, it looks like they are eyeing a legendary American family to be the center of their next historical drama hit.

What to Expect in Netflix's Kennedy Family Drama Series

Netflix recently announced that they are working on a new drama series titled Kennedy, which will tackle the story of the Kennedy family dynasty.

The series promises to reveal "the intimate lives, loves, rivalries, and tragedies that shaped the most iconic dynasty in modern history, and helped create the world we live in today."

The first season, which is set in the 1930s, will explore the improbable ascent of Joe and Rose Kennedy and their nine children, including the rebellious second son, Jack, who struggles to escape the shadow of his golden-boy older brother.

Michael Fassbender has been cast as Joe Kennedy Sr., the patriarch of the infamous family. The casting for the other key roles in the first season will be announced at a later time.

The project will be inspired by Fredrik Logevall’s book JFK: Coming of Age in the American Century. Sam Shaw will serve as the showrunner, while Oscar nominee Thomas Vinterberg will serve as an executive producer and director of several episodes, including the first.

So far, there is no release window set yet for the series, and there are no details on when they are planning to begin production. The project is being seen as the streamer's next The Crown, albeit the American history version.

What is the Idea Behind the Making of the Kennedy Family Drama Series?

Speaking with Tudum, Shaw explained why he decided to come up with the idea of producing a drama series based on the Kennedy family.

"The story of the Kennedys is the closest we have to American mythology — somewhere between Shakespeare and The Bold and the Beautiful," the showrunner said.

"But Fredrik Logevall’s stunning, nuanced biography pulls a veil on the human strivings and burdens behind the myth, revealing as much about our present moment, how we got here and where we’re going, as about the Kennedys themselves."

Shaw continued, "I'm thrilled to be able to explore this saga of a family and a world in transition with Eric Roth, Thomas Vinterberg, and our incredible band of artists and partners, at a moment when our past feels urgently present."

If you're looking for the story on John F. Kennedy's ascendency to the presidency, you may have to wait for more seasons since the series will begin decades before that period of time.
