Jin just ruled with an iron fist as he defeated the Bull Demon with his newfound powers as the long missing ‘fourth scroll’! Now, you might be wondering if we’re getting an American Born Chinese Season 2 soon.
Well, here’s everything we know about American Born Chinese Season 2 returning on Disney Plus!
WARNING: American Born Chinese spoilers ahead!
American Born Chinese Season 2 Release Date: Has American Born Chinese Been Renewed?
Has Disney greenlit American Born Chinese Season 2? As of writing, nothing has been confirmed by Disney Plus, especially since the series’ first season just premiered on May 24, 2023.
However, given the promising cliffhanger of an ending American Born Chinese Season 1 concluded with, an American Born Chinese Season 2 is more than likely!
American Born Chinese ended with Jin Wang (Ben Wang) discovering he was the fourth scroll they have been looking for all along.
Now that his secret identity is out, this poses a threat to the normal high school life he wants and the life of his parents.
Fret not, though, since the author of the graphic novel and also one of the executive producers of the series, Gene Luen Yang, recently told Entertainment Weekly on what we can expect from American Born Chinese Season 2:
“One of the things about a serialized format in television, it reminds me of monthly superhero comics where you can just keep going with the story. Because you can keep going with the story, you can expand the world, and we would love to expand the world of Chinese mythology and bring in many, many more characters.”

American Born Chinese is based on the graphic novel with the same title created by Gene Luen Yang, which covers the experiences of the author as a Chinese American teenager growing up in America in the ‘90s.
Consider the timeline of bringing the graphic novel to life onscreen, which took about 17 years.
It was on October 4, 2021 when Disney Plus had greenlit the adaptation of American Born Chinese under the streamer.
Upon getting greenlit, American Born Chinese began filming on February 8, 2022 in Los Angeles and wrapped up on July 6, 2022, which could mean that American Born Chinese Season 2 could take over six months, without the inclusion of post-production.
However, given the current circumstance of Hollywood’s ongoing WGA strike, it is difficult to pin the exact timeline we could follow for American Born Chinese Season 2’s potential release date or filming start date.
