20th Century Fox
Alita: Battle Angel was just released in the U.S. on Valentine's Day and it topped the North American box office with $8.7 million at 3,790 locations. Given its $170 million production budget, $8.7 isn't that impressive but with last weekend's $32 million profit from 11 international territories, it's a pretty solid start for the film based on the popular Japanese manga by Yukito Kushiro.
Fox's cyberpunk action film, directed by Robert Rodriguez and produced by James Cameron, is expected to gross in the $37 million range during its first five days of release through February 18.
New Line's satirical comedy Isn't It Romantic placed 2nd on Valentine's Day with $4.4 million.
Taraji P. Henson's comedy What Men Want came third and made $3.2 million.
Happy Death Day 2U came fourth with $2.7 million (not bad for a $9 million production budget).
