When AKIRA was released in 1988, the red jacket worn by Kaneda instantly became memorable to fans who enjoyed Katsuhiro Otomo's cyberpunk anime film. Now you can finally own the iconic jacket.
As IGN exlusively revealed, the red Kaneda jacket is now exlusively available through the Funimation Shop. It's directly modeled on the design by AKIRA manga creator/film director Katsuhiro Otomo. The iconic clothing was brought to life by Carlo Levy (Managing Director of DYBEX S.A), Alessandro Trombetta (Designer) and Stefan Henzgen (MD of Van Doornum GmbH & Co.).
"I have been a fan of AKIRA since 1989 when Epic Comics first released it, and imports arrived in Europe," Levy said in a statement. "I always dreamed of having a replica of the iconic jacket and was surprised it hadn't been created by anyone outside of Japan yet, so I did what any super fan would do...I went after the license and had our team design it!"
The limited-edition AKIRA Kaneda Jacket will be exclusively available on Tuesday, July 13, 2021. It's priced at $450 USD and limited to just 300 pieces in the US. This jacket will probably be sold out fast.
The Kaneda Jacket reminds us that fans have been waiting to see a live-action version of AKIRA. The long-awaited AKIRA live-action film continues to stall out. Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi was attached to direct the live-action film, but in February 2020, he told Variety, "I think eventually it will happen. I'm just not sure if I'll be doing it."
However, fans can expect a new AKIRA anime series, that will adapt the original manga in greater depth. Otomo is alos attached the produce the project.
