For the longest time, Sean Bean was rumored to play a major character in The Lord of the Rings franchise, and it wasn't Boromir.
The actor lost the time to tell the truth about a different path, had he been considered for a different character in the epic fantasy saga.
Who Was Sean Bean Supposed to Play in The Lord of the Rings?
In a new interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Bean broke his silence on the rumors about being considered for a different role than Boromir. When asked, "Was it always for Boromir?" Bean did not hesitate to say that Oscar-winning producer Barrie Osborne wanted him to play Aragorn, initially.

While Osborne seemed convinced, Bean did not really see this as a possibility for his side.
"There was talk about Aragorn at one point, and I know Barrie Osborne, one of the producers, I think he was quite keen on me to play Aragorn," Bean explained, "But I mean, you know, I was playing Boromir, settled on that, and then Viggo came along, and he made a magnificent Aragorn."
Podcast host Josh Horowitz brought up the fact that Bean's recent co-star Day-Lewis was also in talks to play Aragorn, seemingly emphasizing that there were other actors, well ahead of Bean's career and popularity at the time, being considered for the role.
How Being Boromir Shaped Sean Bean's Hollywood Career
Despite not landing the significant role of Aragorn, Sean Bean knows how to take the spotlight when it comes to showcasing his acting and commanding his character, especially in franchises.
In Game of Thrones, for example, he only played Lord Eddard Stark in one season and may have only been a main character in Fellowship of the Ring, but his performance solidified his image as being related and tying to both franchises.

Heck, he was even dubbed the "always dies" actor as these roles cemented his reputation. Still, Bean's excellence surpasses being the main scene as Boromir's death remains one of the most memorable events in the Lord of the Rings franchise. The same goes for the Starks in Winterfell.
It tells a lot about Bean himself, admitting that even if he had played Aragorn, he was fixated on playing Boromir well on his own.
Meanwhile, fans can expect The Rings of Power season 3 between 2026 and 2027.
