The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You Season 2 is one of 2025’s most anticipated romance anime releases, but an update from the show’s character designer hints at production issues.
Let’s take a look at the post and what it could mean for the show below.
Is The 100 Girlfriends Season 2 Having Production Issues?
The anime adaptation of Yukiko Nozawa and Rikito Nakamura’s rom-com series, The 100 Girlfriends, which follows Aijo Kentaro on his quest to romance 100 soulmates, is set to premiere its second season on January 12, 2025.
While anticipation is high, chief animation director and character designer Akane Yano recently posted several concerning messages on her X account, mentioning she’s having trouble drawing and is expecting worse to come.
“The countdown to despair has begun,” one of her posts reads. With these unsettling updates appearing so close to the second season’s release, fans can't help but speculate that the issues may be connected, leading many to believe that production problems are occurring at Bibury Animation Studios, the studio behind the series.
It’s unclear exactly what Yano is dealing with, but her posts suggest it might be related to challenges commonly faced by production staff in high-demand anime — poor working conditions that take a toll on physical and mental health.
Examples of anime facing similar controversies in recent years include MAPPA’s Jujutsu Kaisen, Eight Bit’s Blue Lock, and J.C. Staff’s One Punch Man, where staff members have spoken out online about strict deadlines, low pay, and excessive workloads.
However, Yano later updated fans, clarifying that her earlier posts were not related to her work at Bibury Animation. This led many to believe her struggles might be personal rather than work-related.
Some fans also pointed out that Bibury Animation Studios doesn’t seem to have the same intense workload as studios like MAPPA or J.C. Staff. Aside from The 100 Girlfriends, Bibury is currently working on The Quintessential Quintuplets movie, Grisaia: Phantom Trigger the Animation, and Witch Watch.
Whether Yano’s difficulties arise from personal matters or work-related stress, fans continue to show their support, hoping she gets through this time without it affecting her well-being.
Why You Should Watch The 100 Girlfriends Season 2
The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You Season 1 was a surprise hit with viewers in Fall 2023. This came as a shock to many, considering the show carries the harem tag, a genre that often splits romance fans.
The series truly shines through its harem elements, featuring charming leading ladies who, while perhaps too accepting of their polyamorous situation, each have unique personalities that grow as the story progresses.
Rentaro, the main protagonist caught up in the God of Love’s mishap that gave him 100 soulmates to date, quickly became a fan-favorite. His dedication to treating all his girlfriends equally has earned him the title of "chad" among viewers.
Season 1 wrapped up with Rentaro having six girlfriends, leaving him with 94 more to meet before completing his romantic quest.
As of now, more soulmates are on the way. Based on the latest character trailers, fans can look forward to meeting the sporty Iku Suto, the food-obsessed Kurumi Haraga, the stunning yet vain Mimimi Utsukushisugi, and the extremely introverted Meme Kakure!
